A Rainy Night in a Nigerian City

Strange ‘tis,
Walking in the rain
The path to your home
Headlights behind you.

Bent poles, dangling cables–
A myriad of carelessness.
The darkness, the wetness–
You are almost in the ditch.
Wailing hawkers, haggling b

Tales by Moonlight

I remember how we
Used to long for such nights.
Under the starry dark night, sat we
On leather skins and raffia mats
Cuddling our breasts with robed arms
Fondling the warmth enveloped
In our protruding bellies.

We had moments earlier
Stood up from a stumptous meal
Of amala married with a
Steamy bitter-leaf infested egusi sauce.

Testimonies

I remember those times
When darkness crept upon me
Like a midnight adulteress.
Haunting shadows of my worries
And my burdens?
Too heavy for me to bear.

I was pregnant with despair
Trotting heavily along,
Gasping for the day –

Heart - to - Heart

Infatuation is instant desire
‘Tis one set of glands calling to another.
Love: friendship that has caught fire
Takes root and grows – one day at a time.

Infatuation has the mark of insecurity
Excitement eagerness, no genuine happiness
Nagging doubts, unanswered questions
Little bits and pieces of your victim
Would just as soon not examine closely

Those who Wait

In a world of quick rebounds
Where spontaneity is taken
As smartness, people are
Always on the GO!

On this side of existence
A sure way of fulfilling
Our dreams is to frequently

Today and Tomorrow

The air is sparingly moist,

You feel the heat while you're in.

But outside, you get the tan to your skin.

Strongly, I feel the weight

Of the need of upholding righteousness

And shunning all would-be available baits

That would, this season draw me towards sinfulness.

Democracy in Nigeria

When you add plenty

To foolishness:

What you get, is what makes

Our Nigerian legislators pursue

How they can confiscate

Our national WEALTH,

Rather than striving to legislate

For our national HEALTH.

The Ten Virgins

Beautiful virgins, ten they were.

At dusk set they forth,

Bracing the cold and the draught,

On a journey to get

For themselves, what was dear.

O'er the valleys, o'er the mountains,

Through rivers, passing by crystal fountains,

Journeying, willing not to rest awhile

For the prize, no distraction could deny.

Time

Time is life’s thoroughfare
With signposts for each event,
One for this and
Another for that.
It all begins at birth
Probably with one very big signpost:
“Circumcision – seven days ahead.”

Time is a vehicle taking
Us from the past into the future
It slows down when we’re bored.
Sometimes so fast fun doesn’t seem to last.
As we race on this highway
Towards the coast of tomorrow,
Today’s landscape evidently becomes
The history of yesterday.

Prodigal Hearts: The Love Remains

Written February 2004 >>>

---- - ---- - ----

You may be wondering why

We never said goodbye

But this feeling is so strong

'Tis been there for so long.

Once more pass we this way,

Emotions going astray;

Exceeding control bounds.

If they're trying to pull me down

Then, never give up I will;

when He comes and i am in still,

Bask shall I in the glow of your love,

Swept by the flow of the joy above.

Yet another battle is won:

Against sin and self, Love holds on;

Once more- Hope swaying strong.

Now the accuser is off awhile

And though, there ain't a place on earth to hide,

Because I'm safe in Christ, my flame isn't left to die.

*N*O*W*

... ... started March 2006, an ongoing project. >>>

--- - --- - ---

Tomorrow never comes they say,

Give heed to what you do today;

But how much attention do we pay

To events and people that come our way?

Circumstances spring from the blues,

And sometimes we’ve got to pay our dues.

Why do certain things – come in twos

For a problem, its answer and a lesson to use.

Our stay here on earth is our tenure;

Like royalty you can have dominion

Or be a rebel, living in rebellion.

Whichever you choose - well, that's your opinion.
